“Colour of his Dreams”

“Colour of his Dreams”’ is Sofia Minson’s oil painting of 13 year old Saw Min Thet who attends a refugee school on the Thai/Burma border.  When asked “What do you dream?” his answer was “I want to be an artist.”

Saw Min Thet’s school is based by the local rubbish dump where families live and earn a living by collecting recyclable materials.  Supported by the SpinningTop charity, it caters to refugee, orphaned and migrant children, some of whom have been rescued from trafficking.

Although Minson has never met Saw Min, she was inspired by the boy’s dream and says “I imagined him to be painting his own self-portrait through me, an image bursting forth with youthful energy and colour.”

From her Auckland studio Sofia Minson creates bold portrait and landscape oil paintings inspired by the land, myths and people of Aotearoa and her own mixed Māori, Swedish and Irish heritage. Much of her childhood was spent in Samoa, Sri Lanka and China and her art also celebrates the unity she sees amongst richly diverse cultures from around the world.

For nine years Sofia’s oil paintings have been exhibited and collected in the USA, Europe and throughout New Zealand. She has won three national art awards and been a three-time finalist in the Adam Portraiture Awards.
