Maiangi Waitai

Painted stuffed sculptures, mixed media
Aung Min Win Character – 80cm Wide x 95cm High
Kyan Shway Moe Dragon – 110cm Wide x 90cm High
Gangster Girl – 53cm Wide x 100cm High
Forest Trickster – 70cm Wide x 70cm High

I chose these two because they remind me of different characters and ‘toys’ I often use in my work which I imagine to come with certain powers that can help people or enable people to see the future etc … therefore I added two more characters of my own, the red haired figure, ‘Gangster Girl’ a moody looking but benevolent character, and the roundish face of a type of ‘Forest Trickster’, maybe magical, ephemeral, appearing in times of need, then disappearing again.

Maiangi is from Whanganui. Nga Wairiki, TuWharetoa, Rangitane, Ngati Apa.

She completed a Bachelor of fine arts at Whanganui School of Arts 1999, majoring in painting. Since then she has continued to work as an artist and exhibit, complete  private commissions and illustration work – more recently the CD cover art for the Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra, whilst designing and making clothing and accessories for her own label *‘Dead Martin’, currently stocked at Frutti.

Her creative loves include exploration of painting using different forms and mediums – including packaged toys and ‘products’ under the name Zachary Airflow – alongside creations from fabric.
