Flox

Framed Stencil – 147cm Wide x 102cm High

was drawn to Kyin San Moe’s artwork, because it was so beautifully optimistic, and at the same time very brutal. I wanted to give this little girl wings, and make her dream come true in a sense, so I really focused on the butterfly as the main inspiration for the piece. I also had a little chuckle to myself when I saw she wrote that she “would not talk to any ugly birds”. I’m a bit of a self confessed bird freak when it comes to my own artwork, and I really wanted to stay away from my usual style, so I think her words really helped me to do so.

My intention for the piece was to illustrate such a beautiful mind, by incorporating feminine, intricate and very complex cutwork.

Flox was born in Auckland’s fine arts precinct K Road in 2003, after her alter ego Hayley King graduated with a Bachelor in Art and Design from Auckland’s Unitec, majoring in painting. Influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement and design pioneer Owen Jones, she began experimenting with applied decoration via stencils and spray paint, creating a trademark style that sythnesises the harder edges of street art with romantic depictions of the natural world. She has exhibited widely throughout New Zealand, expanding her practice to include prints, live painting, interior murals, private commissions and collaborations.
